Does splitting the dose work better? My 3-month experiment

I ran a systematic 3-month experiment comparing single-dose (200 mg at 7 am) vs split-dose (100 mg at 7 am + 100 mg at 12 pm). Here is the data.

Single dose 200 mg:

  • Strong peak effect hours 2–6
  • Noticeable taper from hour 8
  • Occasional difficulty sleeping before midnight
  • Stronger appetite suppression throughout

Split dose 100+100 mg:

  • Smoother, more consistent effect across the day
  • Less pronounced peak (less “on” feeling but more stable)
  • Better sleep in most cases
  • More flexibility — can skip the second dose on days when I finish work early

Verdict: I prefer the split dose for most days. Single dose on days where I specifically need peak performance in the morning (presentations, intensive writing).

  1. Split dose actually produced slightly less appetite suppression in my experience because the lower peak concentration seems to be the main driver. Worth trying if that is a concern.

  2. I switched to split dosing about 4 months ago and will not go back. The consistency through the day is much better for my workflow which has variable demands hour to hour.

Does the noon second dose not risk keeping you awake into the early hours? My sleep is quite sensitive to modafinil timing.

    1. If you are a sensitive sleeper, I would try 100+50 rather than 100+100, or take the second dose at 11 am rather than noon. Gives you a gentler tail end.

  4. Did you notice any difference in appetite suppression between the two protocols? I struggle to eat enough on single-dose days.

  5. The flexibility point about skipping the second dose is one I had not thought about but is actually a strong argument for the split approach.

I find the single 200 mg dose works better for creative block days where I specifically need the strong peak effect to break through resistance. Each approach has its use case.
