Modafinil vs Adderall: an honest comparison from someone who has used both

I have ADHD and have been prescribed Adderall XR 20 mg for 4 years. I added modafinil to my tool kit 18 months ago. Here is the honest comparison.

Adderall:

  • More powerful motivation kick — getting started on tasks is significantly easier
  • Higher abuse potential — the euphoric component is real
  • Harder crash on comedown
  • More cardiovascular strain
  • Tolerance builds noticeably within weeks
  • Requires DEA scheduling and regular prescriptions

Modafinil:

  • Subtler, more sustainable effect
  • Better for sustained work over 8+ hours without peaks and troughs
  • No meaningful crash
  • Lower abuse potential — no significant euphoria at normal doses
  • Minimal tolerance development

How I use them together: Adderall on days requiring creative push and motivation. Modafinil on execution/production days requiring sustained output. I would not want to take both on the same day.

The “would not take both on the same day” rule seems wise. What is the cardiovascular and CNS load of combining them?

Combining amphetamines and modafinil produces additive cardiovascular strain. Not as dangerous as amphetamines + yohimbine, but more than either alone. Not something to do casually, and ideally under medical supervision.

Did you inform your prescriber about adding modafinil? I ask because there can be interactions and drug interactions with ADHD meds matter.

Yes, my psychiatrist is aware and supportive. The interaction between modafinil and amphetamines is mild — modafinil modestly increases CYP enzyme activity which can lower amphetamine levels. My doctor monitors this.

The ADHD community perception of modafinil is interesting — many people find it underwhelming compared to their prescribed stimulants, while ADHD-free users often find it highly effective. There may be a neurological component explaining this.

ADHD brains have fundamentally different dopamine regulation than neurotypical brains. Modafinil’s more modest dopaminergic effect may simply be insufficient to address the underlying deficit for some ADHD profiles, while being ideal for neurotypical enhancement.

The lower abuse potential of modafinil is one of the key reasons it is considered in some discussions as a potential harm-reduction alternative to amphetamines for ADHD. The subjective profile is less rewarding, which is paradoxically a feature.

The Adderall crash is something I dread every afternoon. Modafinil having essentially no comparable crash is one of its biggest practical advantages.
