Modafinil and microdosing psilocybin: an emerging combination in the biohacking community

An increasing number of biohackers are combining modafinil with microdosed psilocybin. I want to document this clearly with appropriate legal and safety context.

Legal context: Psilocybin is a Schedule I substance in the US and is controlled in most countries. However, decriminalisation has occurred in several US cities and states, and legal therapeutic programs exist in Oregon, Australia, and elsewhere. I am sharing this for harm reduction purposes and am not recommending illegal activity.

The theoretical rationale: Psilocybin (5-HT2A agonist) and modafinil (DAT/NET inhibitor) work on almost entirely different receptor systems. The combination is not expected to be pharmacologically dangerous in terms of direct interaction, though both affect overall brain state and the interaction at the level of neural circuits is complex and poorly studied.

Practical reports from the community:

  • Some users report the combination produces a highly focused but also creative state — the “convergent + divergent” combination
  • Others find the combination too stimulating or that modafinil flattens the microdose benefit
  • At microdose levels (0.1–0.3 g dried psilocybin mushrooms), the interaction is generally mild

Strong recommendation: Attempt this individually first, in safe settings, before combining. The unpredictability of the interaction demands caution.

  1. The cardiovascular interaction is worth checking — psilocybin has serotonergic cardiovascular effects and modafinil has noradrenergic cardiovascular effects. In combination, HR and BP should be monitored by anyone experimenting with this.

Good point on the cardiovascular overlap. At microdose psilocybin levels the 5-HT cardiovascular effects are minimal, but combining with modafinil’s HR elevation still warrants awareness for anyone sensitive.

The receptor system separation makes direct pharmacological interaction unlikely to be severe at microdose levels. The indirect circuit effects are unknown and impossible to predict. This is genuinely uncharted territory.

  3. The community “creative + focused” reports are interesting but the small sample size and confounding effects make it hard to draw conclusions. Rigorous self-experimentation with control days is essential.

The legal context note is important. In places where this is decriminalised or legal (Oregon, Netherlands, parts of Colorado), this discussion has a different practical relevance than in most jurisdictions.

  5. The harm reduction approach to this post is exactly right. Not promoting, not condemning, providing information for people who will experiment anyway. This is what good forum content looks like.

My experience with this combination (in a legal context, Netherlands) is that modafinil can blunt the mood and creative effects of the microdose while preserving the subtle cognitive clarity. Mixed result overall.
