Using modafinil for jet lag recovery — traveller’s guide

I travel internationally 8–12 times per year for work. Modafinil has become an essential part of my jet lag recovery protocol. Here is exactly how I use it.

The jet lag problem modafinil solves: Arriving at a destination in the morning (local time) when your body thinks it is 3 am and you have a full day of meetings. Without intervention, day 1 is largely written off. With modafinil, day 1 is functional.

My protocol for eastward travel (harder direction):

  1. Take 100 mg modafinil at destination-local 8 am on arrival day
  2. Push through to destination-local 9–10 pm — do not nap
  3. Take 0.5 mg melatonin + magnesium glycinate at 9 pm local time
  4. Repeat modafinil at destination-local 8 am on day 2 if needed
  5. Usually fully reset by day 3

Protocol for westward travel (easier direction):

  1. Modafinil on arrival morning if severely tired
  2. Usually reset in 1–2 days without heavy intervention

What makes this work: Modafinil forces entrainment to local time by keeping you awake in daylight hours. The melatonin at local bedtime reinforces the circadian shift. Napping is the enemy of rapid jet lag recovery.

Business travellers who discover this protocol often cannot believe they used to just suffer through jet lag for days. It is one of the most practical use cases for modafinil beyond the pure cognitive enhancement angle.

Does this work for ultra-long haul (15+ hours, e.g. London to Sydney)? Or is the time zone shift too extreme?

    1. Works for Sydney, yes. May need the modafinil protocol for days 1–3 rather than 1–2 for a full 10-hour timezone shift. Day 3 I am usually fully functional.

The “no napping” rule for jet lag recovery is essential and modafinil is one of the only things that makes it genuinely achievable after a long-haul flight. Trying to push through to 9 pm without it is brutal.

The eastward vs westward asymmetry is real and often overlooked. Phase advancing (east travel) is physiologically harder than phase delaying (west). Planning more recovery time for east-bound trips is wise even with modafinil.

Light exposure timing is the other powerful jet lag tool. Combining bright light exposure at destination-morning time with modafinil is more powerful than either alone.

    1. Never on the plane. Sleep on the plane if possible (destination night). Modafinil starts on arrival morning. Modafinil on the plane would ensure you arrive tired and unable to sleep at destination night.
