Modafinil nootropic stacks — what the community is actually using in 2024

Compiled from survey responses and community discussions — the most popular modafinil stacks actually being used in this community in 2024.

The minimalist stack (most popular, ~40% of respondents):

  • Modafinil 100–200 mg
  • Magnesium glycinate 300–400 mg (evening)
  • Low-dose melatonin 0.5–1 mg (bedtime)

The smooth stack (~25% of respondents):

  • Modafinil 100 mg
  • L-theanine 200 mg (with dose)
  • Magnesium glycinate (evening)

The cognitive enhancer stack (~15%):

  • Modafinil 100–200 mg
  • Alpha-GPC 300 mg
  • Bacopa monnieri 300 mg
  • Lion’s mane 500 mg
  • Magnesium glycinate (evening)

The biohacker stack (~10%):

  • Modafinil 100 mg
  • L-theanine 200 mg
  • Alpha-GPC 300 mg
  • Rhodiola rosea 400 mg
  • Ashwagandha KSM-66 (evening)
  • Magnesium glycinate (evening)
  • 0.5 mg melatonin (bedtime)

Solo modafinil (~10%): No additional supplements. Simple and effective for many people who do not need additional support.

  1. I moved from the biohacker stack to the smooth stack over 18 months as I simplified. The mental overhead of managing 8 supplements was itself a cognitive load. Simpler is often better.

  2. The cognitive enhancer stack is ambitious. Has anyone directly compared it to the minimalist stack in a controlled way? I suspect much of the additional supplementation produces placebo effects rather than additive benefit.

    1. Bacopa monnieri has actually reasonable evidence for memory consolidation with regular use. Lion’s mane NGF effects have some research support. Alpha-GPC has choline support evidence. The rest is weaker. So the cognitive stack has a mix of evidence quality.

  3. CognitiveCyclist

Ashwagandha (KSM-66) in the evening has been a meaningful addition to my stack — specifically for managing the elevated cortisol and background stress that I associate with high-demand work days.

  4. The minimalist stack being the most popular matches my own journey. I started with 8 supplements and gradually removed everything that did not make a clear, noticeable difference. Now I use modafinil + magnesium + melatonin and nothing else.

  5. Rhodiola rosea deserves more discussion — it is in the biohacker stack but its adaptogenic effects are one of the better-supported in the plant medicine research. Worth its own dedicated post.

  6. The solo modafinil 10% is worth acknowledging. Not everyone needs or benefits from supplementation beyond the drug itself. If the drug works well alone, adding supplements adds cost and complexity without guaranteed benefit.
