L-theanine is the most commonly recommended addition to modafinil. Here is why it works and how to use it effectively.
What L-theanine does: An amino acid found in tea leaves, L-theanine increases alpha brain wave activity (associated with relaxed alertness), modulates glutamate and GABA signalling, and reduces the anxiety response to stimulating compounds without causing sedation.
Why it pairs well with modafinil: Modafinil can cause overstimulation, anxiety, and a “wired” feeling in some people, particularly at higher doses or when combined with caffeine. L-theanine specifically addresses these side effects through complementary mechanisms.
The evidence: Most research on L-theanine is in combination with caffeine (the classic “smart drug” stack). Direct research on L-theanine + modafinil is limited, but the mechanistic basis is sound and the anecdotal evidence is strong.
How to use it:
- 200 mg L-theanine taken simultaneously with modafinil
- Increase to 400 mg on high-dose days or if anxiety is significant
- Suntheanine brand has the most research backing; standard L-theanine supplements also work
- No meaningful tolerance, safe for daily use
I started L-theanine specifically because I am prone to social anxiety and found modafinil was worsening it. The combination has made modafinil a net positive socially rather than a negative. Strongly recommend for anxiety-prone users.
Does the timing matter? I have been taking L-theanine 30 minutes before modafinil but have seen others recommend taking them together.
For L-theanine specifically, timing is flexible — it absorbs reasonably quickly and its effect is not as timing-sensitive as modafinil. Taking together or slightly before are both fine.
Suntheanine is just a branded form of L-theanine from Taiyo International with consistent quality. Standard L-theanine from reputable supplement brands should work equivalently if Suntheanine-branded products are not available.
L-theanine has been transformative for my modafinil experience. I went from finding 200 mg slightly anxiety-inducing to having a clean, focused experience. It is in my standard stack every day now.
Is there any concern about L-theanine reducing the efficacy of modafinil along with the side effects? I do not want to smooth away the beneficial effects.
In my experience and in community reports generally, L-theanine takes the edge off without reducing the wakefulness and focus benefits. The mechanisms are different enough that it should not directly compete with modafinil’s primary effects.
