Racetams (piracetam, aniracetam, oxiracetam, pramiracetam, etc.) are a class of cognitive enhancers with a different mechanism to modafinil. The combination is popular in nootropics circles. Is it actually beneficial?
The theory: Racetams primarily work on acetylcholine and glutamate systems. Modafinil works primarily on dopamine, norepinephrine, and histamine systems. The mechanisms are largely complementary and non-overlapping, so combining them could theoretically provide broader cognitive enhancement than either alone.
My experience with the combination: Modafinil + aniracetam is my go-to for demanding creative and analytical work. The aniracetam preserves some of the lateral thinking that modafinil alone tends to suppress, while modafinil provides the sustained wakefulness and motivation that aniracetam alone lacks.
Practical notes:
- Racetams require choline co-administration — add Alpha-GPC or CDP-choline
- Start with racetams and modafinil separately before combining
- The combination adds complexity; only worth it if you have optimised each individually
The evidence base for racetams is much thinner than for modafinil. Most piracetam research is in cognitively impaired populations. Extrapolating to healthy cognitive enhancement requires more caution than the nootropics community sometimes acknowledges.
This is a fair point. The anecdotal community evidence for racetams is extensive but the controlled trial evidence in healthy adults is much weaker than for modafinil. Caveat emptor.
The choline requirement with racetams is important and often overlooked. Racetams increase acetylcholine turnover — if you do not have adequate choline, you can end up with headaches and brain fog from choline depletion.
The “only after optimising each individually” advice is worth emphasising. Complex stacks make it impossible to identify which component is causing any given effect. Master each tool before combining.
The complementary mechanism argument is the right framework. This is not additive stimulation — it is potentially complementary cognitive modulation. Different tools for different cognitive domains.
Which racetam would you most recommend for a first combination with modafinil? There are so many options it is overwhelming.
Aniracetam is my recommendation for the combination specifically because of its anxiolytic and creativity-preserving properties — it partially compensates for modafinil’s creativity-reducing tendency. Start with 750 mg aniracetam + alpha-GPC 300 mg + modafinil 100 mg.
