Modafinil productivity hack: the 2-hour morning protocol

After two years of experimenting with modafinil for productivity, I have refined a morning protocol that consistently produces my best work. Here it is.

The 2-hour protected morning block:

6:30 am: Wake. No phone. Drink 500 ml water immediately.

6:45 am: Take 100 mg modafinil with L-theanine 200 mg. Small piece of fruit or handful of nuts to buffer nausea.

6:45–7:30 am: Exercise (20 min) or light walk. This has the dual effect of accelerating modafinil onset through increased circulation and setting a positive physical state for the day.

7:30 am: Shower, prepare workspace. No social media.

8:00 am: Begin work. By this point modafinil is near full effect, physical state is good, workspace is prepared, and there are zero distractions loaded.

8:00–10:00 am: Protected deep work block. Phone on flight mode. No interruptions. This two-hour window is where 70–80% of my productive output happens.

Why it works: Modafinil aligns with the brain’s natural peak performance window (early morning cortisol). The exercise and preparation remove friction before the work session. The protected block respects the cognitive window modafinil creates.

The 500 ml water immediately on waking is a simple habit that has made a noticeable difference to my morning energy independently of modafinil. Good baseline advice.

  2. What happens after the 2-hour protected block? Do you continue modafinil-assisted work or does the protocol call for lighter work after that?

    1. After 10 am I allow meetings, email, and lighter work. The cognitive peak is the 8–10 am window but modafinil keeps me functional and focused until early afternoon. I save the deep work for the protected block because that is when it matters most.

The cortisol alignment point is interesting — cortisol naturally peaks in the first 30–45 minutes after waking. This natural alerting mechanism probably synergises with modafinil’s onset for the best combined effect.

  4. This is almost identical to what I arrived at independently over about a year. The exercise between dosing and sitting down is the step most people skip and it makes a huge difference.

What about on non-modafinil days? Does the same protocol work without the drug, or does it feel hollow?

    1. The protocol structure transfers well to non-modafinil days. The exercise, preparation, and protected block still produce noticeably better output than an unstructured morning — modafinil amplifies an existing structure rather than creating one.

The “no social media loaded before the work session” rule is critical and undervalued. Modafinil will make you hyperfocused on whatever you open first — make sure that is your work, not your notifications.
