I spent 6 months on modafinil (Modalert 200) and then 6 months on armodafinil (Waklert 150) under identical conditions. Here is the detailed comparison.
| Property | Modafinil 200 mg | Armodafinil 150 mg |
|---|---|---|
| Onset | 45–60 minutes | 60–90 minutes (slower) |
| Peak | Strong, 2–6 hours | More gradual, 3–8 hours |
| Duration | ~12 hours effective | ~14 hours effective |
| Evening tail | Mostly clear by 10 pm | Still noticeable at 10 pm |
| Appetite suppression | Strong | Moderate |
| Headache frequency | Moderate (~20% of days) | Lower (~10% of days) |
| Mood effect | More pronounced initial lift | More stable/neutral |
My preference: Armodafinil for sustained work days, modafinil for mornings where I need to be sharp fast. Both are excellent. Different tools.
Is there a cost difference? Armodafinil seems harder to source in some regions.
Waklert 150 (armodafinil by HAB Pharma) and Artvigil 150 are widely available through the same vendors that carry Modalert. Pricing is roughly comparable.
The mood lift from modafinil is something I genuinely miss when on armodafinil. Armodafinil is cleaner but modafinil has more of a motivational push in the first hours.
Which would you recommend for someone sensitive to appetite suppression? I lost weight I could not afford to lose on modafinil.
Armodafinil for sure. The appetite suppression is noticeably less. Also try 100 mg modafinil before switching — the suppression is dose-dependent.
The comparative pharmacology: modafinil is a racemic mixture (R and S enantiomers). Armodafinil is only the R-enantiomer (the more pharmacologically active one). Hence different PK profile and lower effective dose.
The longer tail of armodafinil is its main disadvantage for me. I need to dose even earlier than with modafinil. Takes more discipline about dosing time.
The lower headache frequency on armodafinil matches my experience exactly. Switching was one of the best decisions I made.
Solid comparison. This is the post I wish existed when I started.
