A reflective post after 3 years of modafinil use. I want to share an honest reckoning with what it has and has not changed.
What modafinil has genuinely given me:
- More productive hours per day
- Better quality output on demanding tasks
- More reliable delivery on professional commitments
- Functional days after unavoidable bad nights
What modafinil has NOT given me:
- Better values or clearer priorities — I can work fast on the wrong things
- More meaningful relationships — the reduced warmth cost means this has arguably been neutral
- Better health — sleep quality trade-off means health is net neutral at best
- More happiness — perhaps marginally less, given anhedonia risk on high-frequency use
- Wisdom — no drug gives you that
The honest conclusion: Modafinil makes me a better executor of whatever I choose to do. Whether what I am executing on is worth doing is entirely outside its scope. I still have to figure that out. And sometimes I use modafinil to do more of the wrong things more efficiently, which is a sophisticated form of avoidance.
Use it for the right things. Know what the right things are first.
This is the most honest, philosophically grounded modafinil post I have read in 4 years of following these communities. The “executing faster on the wrong things” trap is real and rarely discussed.
“Use it for the right things. Know what the right things are first.” This should be the tagline for every modafinil community.
Have you made any changes to how you use it as a result of these 3-year reflections?
Yes — fewer days per week, more intentional about what task specifically I am using it for, more protective of off-day time. The shift is from “take it on work days” to “take it for specific demanding work that I have already decided is worth doing.”
The “sophisticated form of avoidance” framing is the kind of self-awareness most productivity content never reaches. You can be highly productive and still be avoiding the important things.
The wisdom point is simple but worth sitting with. Modafinil is a tool, not a teacher. The person using it still needs to do the work of figuring out what matters.
Bookmarked and will re-read periodically. A genuine antidote to the hype.
The relationship net neutral observation is important. Productivity gains at work came with social and relationship costs that roughly offset each other. Modafinil is not a life improvement tool — it is a specific performance tool.
I have shared this post with two friends who were asking me about modafinil. It is the most balanced and complete single post I could give them as a starting point.
The hardest part of reading this is recognising how much of my own modafinil use is executing faster on things I have not properly evaluated. Thanks for the honest mirror.
