Most of the posts in this community seem to be from people in their 20s and early 30s. I am 45 and started modafinil six months ago. My experience may be different enough to be worth sharing.
Why I started: The cognitive slowing that comes in middle age is real. Not dramatic, but noticeable. Slower recall, more mental fatigue by mid-afternoon, less tolerance for deep work after 3 pm.
What changed: The afternoon fatigue wall that I hit daily at about 2:30 pm simply disappeared. I can do quality work until 6 pm now without grinding through it. Recall feels sharper — not youthful sharp, but noticeably better than my pre-modafinil 45-year-old brain.
What I did differently from younger users:
- Started at 50 mg — half a 100 mg pill — for the first month. This was plenty.
- Consulted my GP first. She was not enthusiastic but not opposed and monitored my blood pressure.
- Gave more attention to hydration and nutrition because I could feel the appetite suppression more significantly than younger users report.
The blood pressure monitoring is important advice for older users that does not get mentioned enough. Modafinil can raise BP modestly and at 45+ this is worth keeping an eye on.
Has your GP changed her position after 6 months of stable use and no adverse effects?
She is more comfortable with it now. Last check-in she acknowledged that my blood pressure and general health markers look fine and said she had no concerns about continuation.
Did your GP prescribe it or are you sourcing it independently? In many countries it requires a prescription for a specific condition.
It is available as a scheduled medicine in some countries with a prescription, and purchasable from online pharmacies in others. Always best to have a GP involved if possible.
The 50 mg starting dose advice should honestly be the standard recommendation for everyone, not just older users. Start low, find your minimum effective dose.
The afternoon cognitive wall description resonates. I am 41 and this is exactly what drove me to try it. The 2–4 pm window going from “barely functional” to “still sharp” was the biggest win for me too.
Thank you for sharing this. The 45+ perspective is genuinely rare and valuable. The starting at 50 mg approach is smart — lower doses are often sufficient and reduce side effect risk.
